GOOSE NEST DESTRUCTION PROGRAM

2025 Canadian Geese Program Update

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED

March 2025

A message from Your Vice President Chris Lyons

Dear Friends of Long Lake,

Winter is on its way to a cold, dark memory and spring is soon upon us.  Family, friends and neighbors will be returning to  Our Happy Place along with those who wintered in the south such as the beautiful monarch butterflies, hummingbirds and, you guessed it, GEESE!

This year the Michigan DNR has changed its goose control policy and allowed management methods. Most notably, MDNR has eliminated the goose relocation program due to the persistence of avian flu.  Due to the sheer numbers of geese they say there is no place to relocate them to!

Our goose control program this year will be one where ALL OF US STRONGLY encourage the geese to relocate elsewhere - can you say “Get Off My Lawn!”

One part of how this will be done is by locating and destroying goose nests.

We have applied for the appropriate permits and have engaged Goose Busters to professionally manage nest destruction under the MDNR guidelines.  When done properly, this prompts the geese to continue their travels north to nest elsewhere.

Simply put, we need to know where the goose nests are.

If you see what you suspect is a goose nest, please report the address and approximate location to longlakeassn@yahoo.com

I will provide that information to Goose Busters.  Goose Busters will confirm that the nest is actually a goose nest and, if so, they will follow the appropriate procedures.

Remember - not all nests are goose nests. Many of the nests in the area are great friends of the lake like our loons.   Please be careful not to disturb them.

We are hiring professionals to handle this in order to avoid damaging nest of other desirable friends of the lake, like our loons!
